CHOICE PARALYSIS

Sometimes we feel like to watch some content, we scroll down some OTT platform such as Netflix, Hotstar, Prime Videos etc. We scroll all these for so long but end up without getting anything good to watch, still confused and fail to decide what to watch.

This happens with almost everyone right?

This thing is called Choice Paralysis, where having too many choices makes an individual so much confused about deciding what to do.

This not only happens in the case of Netflix, Hotstar or Prime videos, but even happens while making other choices where we have to choose something where options are numerous. For instance, when we order food from Zomato, Swiggy, when we shop online or offline, when we have choices of too many ice-cream flavors, and we have to choose one among all, when we go out for dinner with family or friends, when we are in a supermarket and get confused about a particular product and most probably it happens while deciding which movie to watch among those thousands.

What causes Choice Paralysis?

Choice Paralysis or Decision Paralysis is a common challenge which each and every individual faces when someone is overloaded with choices, don't know what exactly they want, increasing stress levels and the feeling to give or select the best from all those given choices, but as much the choices increase more the individual starts getting confused and eventually end up with not able to decide what to do.

For example, when someone is filled with stress and fatigue and want to lower down his/her stress level and decides to watch some content and as soon as someone opens any OTT platform or anything and gets thousands of options to choose, and in order to choose the very best content for himself they end up just scrolling up and down and even at the end not able to choose what to watch.

Same happens in while making other choices which we have mentioned above. According to Deloitte, decision paralysis brought on by the inability to choose between options is typically the result of cognitive overload and fatigue. "The human brain simply isn't designed to process and compare the sheer amount of information it is often given.

It's like you have the options of different doors and behind every door there is a different outcome and eventually you end up confused about which door to open.

What is the solution

Here are some tips which will help you to make decision and how to overcome with this.

  1. Keep your choices limited: Doing this one of the simple ways to make better choices, as most of the restaurant, OTT platform, online food ordering apps also do by making a list of best items in the restaurant, OTT platform do this by using trends, rating movies, and mentioning trending movies at the top and same is done by online food ordering apps which makes a person less confused about what to choose among all.
  2. Prioritize your decision: Don't be fickle minded by seeing numerous of choices just remember and give your decision the first priority.
  3. Learn to make quick decisions: Making quick decision is something which will help you to get your things done fast and will save you from getting trapped into this choice paralysis cycle, let's learn this with an example how by simply practicing one thing definitely you can become a better and quick decision maker. Example: Suppose you are in a situation it could be any like you have to go to shopping, watching movie, ordering food anything where the choices are many and you are not getting exactly how to overcome it, just think of its best-case scenario and then then think of its worst-case scenario and if in case you are ready to face both the best and even the worst just don't think much, go for it and believe me it will definitely help you to make quick, better decision and choices.
  4. Take a break and know your one thing: Doing this can be an easy way to come back to things what to exactly want, take a break and think about what is that one thing which I really want and eliminate all other which you don't to focus on that one thing.
  5. Remember why you started: Asking yourself a simple question why you have started this can help to very much to get to your that thing for which you have started. Remember that 'why' and your decisions will become easy.
  6. Ask someone for advice: If even after doing all these you are still confused and not able to choose, just leave everything and ask someone for advice, it can be anyone your friend, your parents, relatives, Google, your social media or YouTube. Doing this can simply give you some better and best options which can make your decision making easy.

These are some simple and basic tips which can help you to make choice and to decide what to do exactly.
